What does an intake manifold do?
Share
The intake manifold is an important component in the engine, which is directly related to the power performance and fuel consumption rate of the car. The function of the intake manifold is to send air into the engine for use in the mixed gas. With the improvement of technology, the intake manifold has also been continuously upgraded, which can provide more guarantees for the enhancement of automobile power.
What is an intake manifold?
In the automotive engineering, an intake manifold or inlet manifold , the part of an engine, can supply the cylinders with a fuel/air mixture. The main function of the intake manifold is to evenly distribute the combustion mixture (or air in direct injection engines) to each intake port in the cylinder head. Uniform distribution is important to optimize the efficiency and performance of the engine. It can also be used as a mount for carburetors, throttle bodies, fuel injectors, and other engine parts. In a reciprocating spark ignition piston engine, a partial vacuum (below atmospheric pressure) exists in the intake manifold due to the downward movement of the piston and the restriction of the throttle. This manifold vacuum can be quite large and can be used as an automotive auxiliary power source to drive auxiliary systems: power assist brakes, emissions controls, cruise control, ignition advance, windshield wipers, power windows, ventilation system valves, etc. This vacuum is also used to extract any piston blow-by from the engine crankcase. This is called a positive crankcase ventilation system where the gas is combusted with the fuel/air mixture.
The basic composition of the intake manifold:
The intake manifold usually includes the intake manifold body, the intake pipe, the intake filter, the throttle and the throttle actuator, and so on. In these parts, the intake manifold body is the most critical part, and its quality and structure directly affect the vehicle's power and fuel consumption. The throttle valve is a key control element, which can realize various control functions such as engine start and stop, acceleration, deceleration, and braking.
The different types of intake manifolds have the following characteristics:
- The multi-point fuel injection engine adopts a centralized intake manifold, which has the advantages of simplicity, reliability, and convenient maintenance.
- The direct-injection engine adopts a distributed intake manifold, which can completely mix the airflow and fuel to avoid the problem of exhaust emission.
- The cold aisle intake manifold is suitable for engines with low temperature environment and high performance requirements, and has excellent power performance.
- The intake manifold matched with the turbocharger has the advantages of better power improvement and reduced fuel consumption.
The usage of intake manifold:
The intake manifold, an important power performance part of an automobile engine, can just meet the needs of the market and consumers for automobile power and reduction in fuel consumption. INAT specializes in high-end auto parts for more than ten years and has strong technology and perfect development capabilities. The intake manifold, produced by INAT Auto Parts, can improve the hot start performance, increase the power and torque of the engine, partly avoid the heat loss in the pipeline during cold start, and accelerate the rise of tourhe gas temperature. In the future, with the continuous improvement of technology, the application of the intake manifold can meet the various needs of consumers for vehicle power performance and fuel consumption performance.
